Perform the Obligatory You must perform the obligatory right of God, which is that you do not associate anything with Him openly or secretly. This is to rely on secondary means, trust in them with one's heart and have full confidence in them. That is when the heart is certain of them and relies on them. That is the greatest calamity which can befall the believer in his religion. God knows best, but that is indicated by His words, "Most of them do not believe in God without associating others with Him." (12:106), meaning that God has better knowledge of this hidden association of another with Him which accompanies belief in the existence of God. This is imperfect faith in the Oneness of God in His Divinity, not in faith in the existence of God. It is related in sound Tradition that the Messenger of God (may God bless him and grant him peace) said, "Do you know that God's right from His servants is that they should worship Him and not associate anything with Him?" So he used the expression "anything." "Anything" is indefinite, and so it includes both overt and hidden association of others with God. Then he said, "Do you know what their right from God is when they do that? It is that He not punish them for it." So reflect on his words, "He does not punish them." When they do not associate anything with God, no thought is connected to them except by God since they have no direction except to God. When they associate of others with God which nullifies Islam, or with hidden association of others with God, which is only being cognizant of normal means, God may punish them for reliance on them because it exposes one to loss. In the state of their existence they are punished by imagining their loss and what will decrease them. When they lose them, they are punished by their loss. So they are punished in every state in both the existence and the absence of means. When they do not associate any secondary cause with God, they have rest and are not concerned about whether the means exist or do not. He is that on which they rely, and He is God who has the power to bring things from where they do not reckon. It is as the Almighty says, "Whoever fears God, He will give him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect" (65:2). One of them composed a poem on that: If anyone fears God, He will give him a way out, as He says in His command. And He will provide for him from where he does not expect. If he is constricted, He will command release of him. One of the signs of full realization of consciousness of God is that provision comes from where a person does not expect. When it comes from where he expects, he does not have full consciousness of God nor reliance on God. The meaning of consciousness of God in some respects is to take God as protection against the effect that means have in your heart when you rely on them. A person has more insight into his self and he knows what he most trusts in and that on which he relies. He does not say, "God commanded me to strive for family and obliged them to provide for them, and so there must be toil in the normal means by which God provides for them." This is not contrary to what we said. We forbade you to rely on them in your heart and to put your trust in them. We did not tell you, "Do not work with them." I went to sleep on my limitation of this aspect and then I returned to myself and recited to clarify what I had not recognized before: Only rely on God. Every matter is in the hand of God. These secondary means are His veil, so only be with God. Look in yourself. If you find that your heart relies on them, then suspect your faith. Know that you are not that person. If you find your heart trusts in God and your state is the same for you, whether you possess the assisting secondary means or lack them, and you are also like that when they are lacking, then we know that you are a person who believes and does not associate anything with God, and you are one of the few. If God provides for you from where you do not expect, that is good news from God that you are one of the ones conscious of God. One of the mysteries of this verse is that even if God provides for you by the normal means which is in your keeping and under your control and disposal, you are conscious of God, meaning you take God as your Protector. He is the Protector and you are provided for from where you do not expect. It is not in your expectation that God would provide for you when it must be from what is in your possession. Part of the result with you is that you are only provided form where you do not expect, even if you eat and are provided for from that which is in your possession. So you must know that. It is a fine meaning, only possessed by the people of Divine watchfulness who are attentive to what is inside them and their hearts. Only God possesses protection. He forbids the servant to put his full reliance on secondary means since he must rely on God Almighty. This is the reason why he says, "He will give him a way out." This is the way out provided by consciousness of God in this verse.
